A high level tank, also known as an expansion tank, is an important component in a liquid phase thermal fluid furnace heating system. It is usually set at the highest point of the system and serves a variety of functions in addition to accommodating thermal expansion of the heat transfer fluid. For example, it can be used to evacuate light components from newly filled products and low-boiling materials generated during operation, to replenish evaporation and operating losses, and to perform nitrogen sealing.

In practice, some installations require nitrogen sealing of the high level tank. The main function of nitrogen sealing is to prevent oxidation of the heat transfer fluid due to exposure to air, and a certain pressure can be applied to keep the liquid phase running. In general, oxidation of the heat transfer fluid can be controlled by system setup, operation, and the addition of high temperature antioxidants.

In addition, high level tanks are widely used in the production and processing of various polypropylene PP tanks, storage tanks and vacuum metering tanks.
